REPORT: The Department of English organised the screened the Visual Text for the first year students

The Department of English organised the screened the Visual Text for the first year students doing the English course ENG 131. The sessions were split into three sessions. The first session was held between 8.00 am and 9.30 am for B.Com Professionals, BBA F&A, B.Com Morning, and the second session was held between 10.00 am and 12.00 pm for B.Com R, Hons and BBA and BBA T and the third session between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm for BA and B.Sc students.

The text screened was ‘Nero’s Guest’. The visual text is part of the English syllabus and is used in order to help students look at audio-visual selections as text and analyse them accordingly. The screening of the documentary was for one hour followed by a presentation and a panel discussion. The details of how a visual text should be analysed, what is the purpose of certain elements present within the documentary, were discussed by Prof. Arya Aiyyapan. 

This was followed by a panel discussion by Prof. Suparna Kar from the Department of Sociology, Prof. Reju from the Department of English and Prof. Padmakumar from the Department of Media Studies. 
 The panellists covered details of sociological concerns, impact of the documentary on the society, need for the screening of this text, analysis of the title and its significance, and about farming and poverty in India. The discussion raised significant questions from the audience which were answered by the panellists.
