Report on National Seminar (Web) on “BIO-DIVERSITY, CONNECTING WITH NATURE

The Life Science Association, Department of Life Sciences, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) organized one day National Seminar (Webinar) on “BIO-DIVERSITY, CONNECTING WITH NATURE” on 14th July, 2020 coordinated jointly by Dr. Anish Nag, Dr. S. Siddharthan and Dr.P.Manikantan. A Total of 456 registered participants from various parts of the country attended the seminar. The program hosted two invited talks by Dr.Subrata Raha (Professor and Head, Departmen of Botany, Sidho Kanha Brisa University, West Bengal) and Dr. Sharad Suresh Kambala (Department of Botany, MarathaVidya Prasarak Samaj's Arts, Commerce and Science college, Tryambakeshwaran, Nashik, Maharashtra) respectively.
Session 1(10 – 11 AM): Dr.Subrata Raha has delivered his talk on “Diversity and Distribution of Orchids and Parasitic Angiosperms in Purulia Districts, West Bengal. In his talk, he explained on various species distribution of Orchids and parasitizing on hosts as twiner how to perfectly get flowers and fruits during late monsoon and in winter in Bengal. Also, he described how plants are associated with various purposes in ecosystem development and why it needs special attention to save the plant to save the biodiversity of the forest. He enlightened the participants with the need and purpose for conserving orchids.
Session 2 (5-6 PM): Dr.Sharad Suresh has given talk on “Ceropegias in India: Diversity, Problems and Prospects”. In this talk he explained in very flawless manner like how genus Ceropegia (Apocynaceae: Ceropegieae) is revised in India and how we should follow the literature and extensive studies. Moreover, he explained that, more than sixty taxa are recognized under several sections and its distribution status on each species in Indian sub-continent. Similarly, he described the importance of colour photoplates in taxonomic keys for further research.
