REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR ON APPLIED BIOSCIENCES ORGANIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF LIFE SCIENCES IN ASSOCIATION WITH LIFE SCIENCE ASSOCIATION ON 7TH AND 8TH AUGUST 2020
The Department of Life Sciences in with the Life Science Association organized an “International webinar on Applied Biosciences” on 7th and 8th August 2020. There were two lectures by eminent scientists from South Africa and South Korea. The webinar was broadcasted live on YouTube with more than 1500 unique visitors. The participants who registered were from various educational institutions across India and from countries like Oman, Suadi Arabia, Uruguay and Philippines. The welcome address was given by Dr. Anish Nag. The moderation and discussion were carried out by Dr. Siddharthan and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Manikantan. The organization of the webinar was jointly coordinated by Dr. Anish Nag, Dr. Manikantan and Dr. Siddharthan.
Lecture 1 (7August 2020, 1PM)
The first speaker
was Dr. B. Balamuralikrishnan, Assistant Professor (Research), Department of
Food Science and Biotechnology, Sejong University, South Korea.
Dr.
Balamuralikrishnan presented his lecture on the “Role of Feed Additives in
Livestock”.
In his lecture he explained how feed
additives are important in production of non-nutritive products added to the
basic feed mix to enhance growth or other productive function, and enumerated
how to increase efficiency of feed utilization, preserve feeds, or benefit
animal health or metabolism. In addition, he described that feed additives are
non-nutritive products added to rations to improve the efficiency of animal
production via an improvement in intake, digestion, and/or metabolism
efficiency, and/or the health of the animal.

Lecture 2 (8 August 2020, 2PM)
The second speaker was Dr. Sudhakar Muniyasamy, Senior Research Scientist,
Nanostructured and Advanced Materials, Chemicals Cluster, Council for
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Pretoria, South Africa. His talk was
focused on the biotechnological enhancement of feed for feed especially swine.
Dr. Muniyasamy is
an expert in bioplastics and he based his talk on the title “Bioplastics from
Renewable Resources: An Eco-friendly Alternative to Conventional Plastic” He
spoke about the advantages of of biodegradable plastics in mitigating urban
waste generation and the use of bio-degradable plastics from agricultural and
food wastes using microorganisms. His talk generated a lot of discussion among
the audience with regard to bioplastic research. The link for his talk can be
