Strengthening Ties: U.S. and India Forge Ahead at “Partners in Progress” Symposium


In an exemplary display of international cooperation, the “Partners in Progress” symposium, jointly organised by the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University and Christ University, Bengaluru, with support from the U.S. Consulate General Chennai, commenced on Monday, June 10 in Bengaluru. The event was inaugurated by Rear Admiral Nirbhay Bapna, Assistant Chief of the Indian Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Michael Baker, Senior Defence Official and U.S. Defence Attaché, and Christ University Vice Chancellor Rev. Dr. Jose CC.

Keynote speakers, including Dr. Satu Limaye, the East-West Centre Vice President, and Mr. Arun Singh, Former Indian Ambassador to the United States, provided invaluable U.S. and Indian perspectives during the symposium’s plenary session.

A Unified Vision for Peace and Prosperity

During his inaugural keynote address, Indian Rear Admiral Nirbhay Bapna emphasised the robust partnership between the U.S. and India amidst global challenges. He highlighted, “In these troubled times, the U.S. and India have emerged as like-minded and trusted partners. Our 75-year partnership has evolved into a comprehensive global strategic alliance.” Bapna underscored the importance of information sharing and maritime domain awareness, foreseeing an even deeper collaboration in emerging fields such as cybersecurity, space, underwater exploration, and artificial intelligence. “The evolving security dynamics underscore the importance of a strong Indo-U.S. naval partnership, which is a testament to the strength of our strategic relationship,” he added.


A Pillar of Global Peace and Security

In his opening remarks to over 50 subject-matter experts, U.S. Rear Admiral Michael Baker reinforced the significance of the U.S.-India Major Defence Partnership as a cornerstone of global peace and security. “Our countries are making substantial progress through joint exercises, defence industrial cooperation, the annual 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue, and other consultative mechanisms,” Baker stated. He emphasised that these efforts are crucial for advancing a comprehensive defence partnership, ensuring seamless coordination between the militaries of both nations. “Both countries are vital partners in ensuring that the Indo-Pacific remains a region of peace, stability, and growing prosperity,” he concluded.

Thematic Focus and Strategic Dialogues

The Partners in Progress symposium focused on several critical thematic areas, including the U.S.-India strategic landscape, defence and security dialogues, defence technology trade and production, and military interoperability. The event brought together 50 U.S. and Indian opinion leaders and strategic analysts, fostering insightful discussions on geopolitics and international relations.

This symposium marks a significant milestone in the U.S.-India partnership, showcasing a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. As both nations continue to enhance their collaboration across various domains, the future of their strategic relationship looks promising and resilient.
